As part of the on-going battle against clutter and attempting to pare down our possessions, I’ve implemented a new rule around gifts. No physical gifts (birthday or Christmas presents, and the like) unless they are either on an Amazon wish-list, or in special cases cleared by a spouse. Money is always good, gift certificates, nicely written cards, those are always welcome. There’s a wide swath of things that would be nice gifts but that might not be worth keeping and then moving 3,000 miles across the country.
Anything that I really need goes onto the Amazon wish-list.
I think the new rule will really help with the whole “accumulating stuff” problem. Especially when combined with my new awareness of clutter and asking myself the question “Do I really need this, and do I want to pack it, and move it 3,000 miles?” before I buy anything.
